READING
THE FAMILY NOBODY EXPECTED
Maya is seventeen and lives with her mother, her younger brother, and her grandmother.
Her family is big. Really big.
Her family is big. Really big.
Every Sunday, a different relative comes to their house. This Sunday, Maya's aunt brings her two children, Leo and Nina. They are Maya's cousins.
Leo is thirteen. He is funny, energetic, and very talkative. Nina is eleven. She is quiet and a little shy.
A few minutes later, Maya's uncle arrives with his wife. Then two neighbours come because Maya's grandmother invited them for lunch.
“Are they family?” Maya asks.
Her grandmother laughs.
“Not exactly. But good neighbours can become like family.”
Soon the house is full. There are twelve people at the table. Everyone is talking. Everyone is eating. Everyone has a different story. Maya looks around the table. She realises something. Her family isn't perfect. Sometimes they argue. Sometimes they don't understand each other. But they always come back. And Maya loves that.
Think deeper 🤔
- Why does the grandmother say good neighbours can become like family?
- Would you enjoy this family lunch?
- Is a family only people who are related to you?
- Who can become “like family” in your life?
