The Others (2001) is a gothic supernatural horror film directed by Alejandro Amenábar, starring Nicole Kidman as Grace Stewart.
Plot and Setting
  • Setting: A darkened mansion on the island of Jersey in the Channel Islands, set in the year 1945 just after World War II.
  • Premise: Grace lives with her two children, Anne and Nicholas, who suffer from an extreme, fatal allergy to direct sunlight (xeroderma pigmentosum). She enforces strict rules—every door must be locked and unlocked only after the previous one is closed—to protect them. 
Key Themes and Twist
  • The Haunting: Grace hires three new servants, after which strange paranormal occurrences plague the house. The children claim to see a strange family, leading Grace to believe the house is haunted. 
  • The Reveal: The "intruders" are actually the living family currently inhabiting the house, and Grace, her children, and her servants are the ghosts. 
  • The Tragedy: Overwhelmed by isolation and grief during the war, Grace suffered a mental breakdown, murdered her two children with a pillow, and shot herself. Having forgotten her own crime, she trapped herself and her children in denial until the truth is finally revealed at the end.
