📖 2. READING (Extended + Vocabulary Inside)

Story: “A Very Bad Arrival”

Naomi was expecting a fresh start when she arrived in the small town of Knockemout. She had planned everything carefully, and she was feeling both nervous and hopeful.

However, things quickly went wrong.

While she was driving down a quiet street, her car suddenly started making a strange noise. At first, she tried to ignore it, but within minutes, the engine completely failed.

At that moment, she was talking on the phone with her sister, who was asking for help — again. Naomi felt frustrated because she was already dealing with her own problems.

When the car finally stopped, Naomi got out and looked around. The town seemed calm, but something about it felt unusual. A few people were standing nearby, and they were watching her with clear curiosity.

She realized that she was attracting attention, which made her even more uncomfortable.

Across the street, a tall man was repairing a fence. He appeared confident but slightly rude. Naomi walked toward him while she was trying to stay polite.

“Excuse me,” she said, “my car broke down. Could you possibly help me?”

The man, Knox, looked at her briefly while he was holding his tools. For a moment, he didn’t respond.

“I’m busy,” he finally replied, in a cold and distant tone.

Naomi felt annoyed. She was not used to being ignored. While she was thinking about what to say next, Knox suddenly put down his tools and sighed.

“Fine,” he said, “I’ll take a look.”

Although he seemed unfriendly, he still decided to help — which Naomi didn’t expect at all.

At that moment, she realized that this town was going to be much more complicated than she had imagined.
